Origin of FS2 Weapon Names

GTW Prometheus: Prometheus was the son of Iapetus who was one of the Titans. He tricked the gods into eating bare bones instead of good meat. He stole the sacred fire from Zeus and the gods.

GTW Maxim: The Maxim was the first fully automatic machine gun, developed by engineer and inventor Hiram Maxim in about 1884, while he was residing in England. It was manufactured by Vickers and was sometimes known as the Vickers-Maxim and sometimes just Vickers. These guns were used by every major power. The Maxim gun was recoil-operated and was cooled by a water jacket surrounding the barrel. The Maxim was in large part responsible for the epithet "the machine gun war" for World War I. © 1999-2000 Britannica.com Inc.

GTW Kayser: German physicist who discovered the presence of helium in the Earth's atmosphere. Kayser's early research work was on the properties of sound. In collaboration with the physicist and mathematician Carl D.T. Runge, Kayser carefully mapped the spectra of a large number of elements and discovered the existence of series, or closely grouped spectral lines, the spacing and intensity of which vary in a regular manner. In 1883 they developed a mathematical formula that showed the relationship between these lines. © 1999-2000 Britannica.com Inc.

GTW Circe: Circe, daughter of the sun, was a sorceress best known for her ability to turn men into animals with her magic wand. The daughter of Perse and Helios, and whose daughter is Aega (goddess of the sun) she is remembered for her encounter with Odysseus and his men, and renowned for her knowledge of magic and poisonous herbs.

GTW Lamprey: The Lamprey is any of about 22 species of primitive, fishlike, jawless vertebrates placed with hagfishes in the class Agnatha. Lampreys belong to the family Petromyzonidae. They live in coastal and freshwaters and are found in temperate regions around the world, except in Africa. Eel-like, scaleless animals, they range from about 15 to 100 centimetres (6 to 40 inches) long. They have well-developed eyes, one or two dorsal fins, a tail fin, a single nostril on top of the head, and seven gill openings on each side of the body. © 1999-2000 Britannica.com Inc.

GTM Tempest: A violent storm.

GTM Hornet: A hornet is any stinging member (formerly called Aculeata) of the insect suborder Apocrita (order Hymenoptera), other than bees and ants, as well as certain nonstinging insects of the suborder Symphyta: wood wasps, cedarwood wasps, and parasitic wood wasps.

GTM Tornado: A tornado is a violent cyclonic storm, relatively small in diameter but with rapidly rotating winds that form a funnel cloud, or vortex, and that moves over land. Whirlwinds are similar but smaller storms of less intensity. When a tornado forms or passes over a water surface, it is called a waterspout.

GTM Harpoon: barbed spear used to kill whales, tuna, swordfish, and other large sea creatures, formerly thrown by hand but now, in the case of whales, shot from especially constructed guns.

GTM Trebuchet: In general, the mechanical artillery of medieval times was inferior to that of the Classical world. The one exception was the trebuchet, an engine worked by counterpoise. Counterpoise engines appeared in the 12th century and largely replaced torsion engines by the middle of the 13th. The trebuchet worked something like a seesaw. Suspended from an elevated wooden frame, the arm of the trebuchet pivoted from a point about one-quarter of the way down its length. A large weight, or counterpoise, was suspended from the short end, and the long end was fitted with a hollowed-out spoonlike cavity or a sling.

GTM Piranha: also called Caribe, OR Piraya, any of several species of carnivorous fishes of the genus Serrasalmus, in the characin family, Characidae. Piranhas are renowned for their voracity and reputed ferocity. They are abundant in the rivers of eastern and central South America. Potentially one of the most dangerous species, S. nattereri attains a maximum length of about 60 cm (2 feet), but most species are smaller. © 1999-2000 Britannica.com Inc.

GTM Stiletto II: Any insect of the family Therevidae (order Diptera), composed of about 670 species. The hairy or bristly, slender adults are usually found in open areas, such as pastures. © 1999-2000 Britannica.com Inc. It couls also mean a type of dagger, long and thin. His other two daughters are Phaethusa ("radiant") and Lampetia ("shining"). He had a son, named Phaeton, whom he once allowed to guide his chariot across the sky. The unskilled youth could not control the horses and fell towards his death.
