Introduction to FS2
Welcome to FS2! If you have ever played Freespace2 before, you know how different it is from the original Descent-Freespace. Capital ships are much harder to destroy, with beam cannons and flak exploding all around you. This also works in your favor, because in escort missions your ships are better protected than before. In Freespace2, there are 3 main types of missions that I have come upon. They are the escort missions, strike missions, and undercover missions.
Escort Missions in FS2
Escort missions have evolved a great deal from their ancestors in Descent-Freespace. For instance, when you had to guard the Bastion in one of the missions, it was a major pain because the Orion could not stop fighters and bombers. The Bastion would literally get ripped to shreds in minutes if you didn't destroy all the bombers and bombs. In Freespace2, the Orion still has almost no anti-fighter capabilities, but most other ships are a terror to attack. Even freighters have some some anti-fighter capabilities, but not much. The same holds true in Descent-Freespace and Freespace2. You MUST shoot down bombers and bombs first, than worry about the fighters. The damage done by fighters is minimal comparable to what a wing of bombers can do to your convoy.
Strike Missions in FS2
In most assault missions you participate in, the enemy almost always outnumber you. Actually, in EVERY mission you are outnumbered by Shivans or the NTF or whatever other enemy you are fighting. This can be a big disadvantage to you, especially in the higher difficulties where every enemy shot rips through your shields and slams into your hull. It kinda sucks when you have 10 Shivans bearing down on you because all of your wingmen are dead. Also, strike missions against larger cap-ships are much harder with the addition of new weapons such as beams and flak, and even engine wash. It used to be that in Descent-Freespace you could just come up right behind a cap ship and shoot it from behind where it's defenseless. Not any more. Capital ships now have anti-fighter beams mounted in the back, and if you fly behind the engines you'll notice that you'll get bounced around by the ship's engine wash. This makes the life of a bomber much harder, since you have to get within atleast 400-300 meters and launch your bombs at the targetm with flak and beam cannon fire exploding all around you.
Undercover Missions in FS2
A new aspect of missions is started in Freespace2: Undercover missions. There may have been some in the Silent Threat add-on pack, but I never got that so I would not know. Anyways, undercover missions involve going undercover (duh!) in often dangerous missions. For instance, you have 3 missions where you have to go undercover with NTF forces, and in the last mission they figure out you are a spy and nearly kill you! In another mission, you have to fly into Shivan space in a Mara, all while avoiding a nearly endless wave of fighters with no back up. It's just 4 Maras versus a whole Shivan fleet. Undercover type of missions usually play the same as regular FS2 missions. Just listen to the briefing, and you should be fine.
